DESCRIPTION:June 21st is Make Music Marion Day! Join us at 1pm or 3pm in the McCoskey Room for the presentation:\nLatin Hip Hop as the New Poetry with Illinois Humanities Road Scholar\, Catalina Maria Johnson. \nDon’t forget to stop by the Young Adult Department and the Children’s Department\, all day long\, for music-themed crafts. \nLatin hip hop artists are advancing the poetic traditions of their countries in unique ways. Ana Tijoux from Chile was raised on protest songs and Pablo Neruda; Residente from Calle 13\, Puerto Rico spits out rhymes as carefully crafted as any poet’s; Niña Dioz from Mexico reads dictionaries to find the precise words to fit her ideas and rhymes; Xiutehzcatl from Boulder\, Colorado rhymes in three languages: Spanish\, English and Nahuatl–an ancient indigenous language. Nevertheless\, academia and poetic circles have surprisingly not embraced and celebrated these artists as poets. \nThis program\, with video and lyric examples\, will make a case for hip hop as the new poetry with a focus on Latinos in the U.S. and the Americas. The presentation\, paired with slides and a rich set of musical videos\, is lively\, light and fun\, and focused on participation\, discussion\, and musical enjoyment! \nPresented by Illinois Humanities Road Scholar\, Catalina Maria Johnson. \nCatalina Maria Johnson\, Ph.D. is a Chicago-based music journalist. She hosts and produces her own radio show\, Beat Latino\, which airs in Chicago on Vocalo (Chicago Public Media) and other USA cities as well as Berlin. Catalina is also a regular contributor to NPR\, Songlines and other publications\, and an editorial board member of Revista Contratiempo. \nCatalina’s music journalism explores the extraordinary diversity of the global music scene with an emphasis on Latine music – from the most traditional roots music to cutting-edge electronic grooves. \nIllinois Road Scholars and Illinois Humanities is supported in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities: Democracy Demands Wisdom and the Illinois General Assembly [through the Illinois Arts Council Agency]\, as well as by contributions from individuals\, foundations\, and corporations.

DESCRIPTION:This October\, take some time to appreciate some of our incredible libraries throughout the State of Illinois! \nThe Annual Library Crawl is a unique event organized by the public libraries of Illinois Heartland Library System as a fun way to introduce our public library’s patrons to the other libraries of the IHLS service area. Patrons can visit area libraries throughout the month of the crawl and get a passport stamp at each library they visit. Some patrons have tried to visit every library in the crawl! The main purpose\, though\, is to help participants discover the many\, many great resources available to them with their library cards. \nPick up a Library Crawl Passport from MCL’s Main Desk\, and get a stamp from each participating library you visit. \nShare your posts with the hashtag #IHLSLibraryCrawl2025 to let everyone follow your adventure! The first three Marion Carnegie Library patrons who return a passport with at least five stamps will receive a small gift bag of Marion Carnegie Library branded items! \nALL MONTH LONG!
