Robots Come to Life At Marion Carnegie Library
August 6,2008

Marion Carnegie Library presented “Robots” on August 5.  The program included several different types of robots and a remote-controlled hovercraft.  The robots included a “bug,” which has six legs; a biped, which walks on two legs; and one on a track, which rolls along like a bulldozer.  Robot movement was explained, such as the limits of a robot ankle, which can only move in two directions, unlike a human ankle.  The audience was also given the opportunity to try their hand at building a robot.  They also learned how to give commands to a robot via a computer.

The program featured demonstrations and discussion by Dave Allabastro, electronics engineering assistant; David Williams, visiting instructor; and Bryan Snow, Information Technology graduate student and Hoverclub president, all from Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

Allabastro also provides technical support for the SIU Hoverclub, which is a hovercraft build and design team.  Students design the craft, calculate measurements and produce parts when needed.

More Than 170 Meet the Reptiles At Marion Carnegie Library
July 28, 2008

The Marion Carnegie Library hosted “Meet the Reptiles” with William Lytle of Timberline Fisheries on July 28.  More than 170 audience members listened to information about snakes, turtles and lizards.  They were able to view the animals and had the opportunity to touch a corn snake at the end of the program.

The animals featured in the program included an albino snake, a skink lizard, a box turtle and a leopard gecko.  Lytle is pictured explaining the difference between three kinds of corn snakes:  snow, albino and normal.

The discussion focused on habitats, pigmentation and other physical traits of the reptiles.  Audience members asked questions, mainly about what the reptiles eat (lizards eat insects and snakes like mice) and if they bite (they can and sometimes do).  Lytle also offered tips for those interested in having a reptile as a pet.
